Seymour Kushner at the Concert for New York

As a music enthusiast, Seymour Kushner has seen live performances of some of the most acclaimed modern dance ensembles in the world. He has also been to shows at some of history’s most fabled jazz clubs. For all of this, though, Seymour Kushner says his most memorable and moving concert experience was a rock and roll show—specifically, the Concert for New York City.

To be sure, Seymour Kushner is not alone in declaring this event to be an enduring favorite. Many were in attendance at this performance, and no one who was there will ever be able to forget it. The concert—a six-hour benefit following the events of 9/11—featured performances from some of the biggest names in music, as well as a number of short films and celebrity appearances.

Seymour Kushner was in attendance for the full benefit, which included:

  • Performances from some of rock’s all-time legends, including David Bowie, Billy Joel, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Elton John, The Who, Keith Richards, and Mick Jagger.
  • Appearances from some younger up-and-comers, as well, including Jay-Z, Five for Fighting, Destiny’s Child, Backstreet Boys, Goo Goo Dolls, and Macy Gray.
  • A rousing, concert-ending performance from pop icon and benefit organizer Sir Paul McCartney, a set that included Beatles classics, solo hits, and a new composition, “Freedom.”
  • Impassioned words from then-New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
  • Cameos from celebrities like Susan Sarandon, Halle Berry, Harrison Ford, and Howard Stern.
  • Will Ferrell, doing his uproarious impersonation of President George W. Bush.
  • Comedian Adam Sandler, singing a satirical, 9/11-themed medley in his Operaman character.
  • Short films from the likes of Spike Lee, Woody Allen, Kevin Smith, Martin Scorsese, and Jerry Seinfeld.
  • A few words from former president Bill Clinton.

Seymour Kushner says the event was both “overwhelming” and “intense.” He elaborates by noting that the show was clearly not just another concert; he could tell that each star and musician present regarded it as something extraordinary and unique. Surely, Seymour Kushner and the many other concertgoers in attendance felt much the same way!
